Something as simple as water as an ingredient in creams and lotions may sound innocent enough, but be aware of the pitfalls:

Water in skin care products invites mold and microbial growth, which means strong preservatives or alcohol must also be added. Neither one are beneficial to your skin.

Water is a cheap inactive filler ingredient that offers no beneficial qualities, so why pay for it?

If you see water as an ingredient, you should question the product altogether. Look for products that have 100% active/beneficial ingredients. Make sure that whatever you are paying for is not filled with anything that does not improve the health, texture and beauty of your skin. This includes fillers that provide no benefits like water, and fillers that are harmful including any type or derivative of alcohol and mineral oil. There are other fillers such as “fragrances” and “colors” that may include all types of synthetic chemicals as well. Always read the entire label before you buy anything. If you don’t know what the ingredient is, or if you can’t pronounce it, avoid it.

All Forms of Alcohol on Your Skin Have Negative Health Effects

Alcohol in many chemical variations exists in nearly every skin care product except Oils of Youth. Even most “Organic” and very expensive lotions and skin care products have substantial amounts of one form or another of alcohol. The reasons other manufacturers use alcohol are varied: a cheap filler ingredient, a preservative, a carrier ingredient to carry the other active ingredients into the skin cells, or to help evaporate the oils used in the product.

Regardless of the reasons for using alcohol, it’s obvious that alcohol is both a drying agent that defeats the purpose of any moisturizer, and a oxidant/poison that kills healthy cells.

Alcohol in cosmetics typically consists of one or more of three types of chemical additives: ethyl, isopropyl and methyl.

Isopropyl, the chemical used to produce isopropyl alcohol, is manmade, like alcohol itself, and does not have a natural source. Isopropyl and methyl are both considered poisonous or toxic, where ethyl is not.

Isopropyl alcohol is a liquid petroleum derivative used in the manufacturing of industrial products such as resins, inks, glycerol, acetone, solvents, industrial cleaners, window cleaner, antifreeze and shellac. Isopropyl alcohol is also found in most hand lotions, hair color rinses, body rubs, after-shave, fragrances and many other cosmetics.

According to A Consumers Dictionary of Cosmetic Ingredients, inhalation or ingestion of the vapor may cause headaches, flushing, dizziness, mental depression, nausea, vomiting and coma.

External irritations of the skin and eyes may occur from acute exposure to isopropyl alcohol. The mucous membranes, including the nose and throat, are common sites for internal irritation. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) notes that these symptoms may begin within three minutes of exposure to an isopropyl alcohol solution that is 400 ppm in strength. Stronger solutions cause more severe degrees of this irritation. OSHA also notes that isolated cases of eczema and skin sensitization have been reported, though these are not common.

Methyl alcohol is used primarily in solvents, like paint remover, as well as in lacquers, nail polish remover and windshield-washing fluid. Methyl alcohol is toxic if ingested, and can be dangerous when inhaled for a prolonged period.

Bottom line: Why would you put anything on your skin that is a drying, oxidizing toxic agent and a known skin and eye irritant? The better question, is why would any manufacturer with a conscience add this to their product?

You can avoid this and other toxins, oxidants and irritants by reading every label, and by using Oils of Youth.

Mineral Oil Carries Many Negaitive Side Effects

Other names used for mineral oil: Liquidum paraffinum, Paraffin oil, Paraffin wax and Petrolatum.

Mineral oil is really a petroleum (crude oil) by-product, just like motor oil, and it is composed entirely of hydrogen and carbon. Mineral oil coats the skin and clogs the pores like a liquid plastic. By coating and clogging the pores, mineral oil and its derivatives interfere with your skins ability to eliminate toxins, or even sweat properly, thus promoting acne and other skin problems.

By coating the skin with plasticizing mineral oil, you may slow down the natural cell development, causing premature aging. Mineral oil is a very cheap filler ingredient that feels smooth and soft to the touch (so does motor oil) and is commonly used in many skin care products and lotions(baby oil is 100% mineral oil).

Besides clogging your pores, blocking toxic elimination through the skin, and hindering skin cell rejuvenation, all mineral oil derivative can be contaminated with cancer causing PAH’s (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons). Motor oil is now labeled in California as a carcinogen, and they warn against any skin contact. Mineral oil comes from the same crude oil source.

Mineral oil increases the risk of cancer in rats that are irradiated twice a week for twenty weeks. Mineral oil can also cause health problems if absorbed in tissue, and may prevent essential nutrients from reaching the intestines, as well as cause temporary incontinence of the bowels.

If a product is using mineral in their ingredients, clearly the manufacturer is unaware of its dangers and negative effects on the skin, or they are simply looking for a low cost filler that feels nice to the touch.

You would be wise to avoid any lotion, cream or product that includes mineral oil, Liquidum paraffinum, Paraffin oil, Paraffin wax, or Petrolatum.

In other words, “active ingredients” means those ingredients that are useful or beneficial, but they are not ALL the ingredients, which may include harmful ingredients such as synthetics, mineral oil, preservatives, alcohol, artificial colors, heavy metals, stabilizers, and more.

As always, know what you are puting in and on your body, as only you can protect yourself from the effects of chemicals, petrolium based products and synthetics.

What is the big deal about USDA Certified Organic ingredients? Well everything in our minds. Only products that bear the USDA Certified Organic seal are truly “Organic” or made from organic ingredients.

1. This means that throughout the growing, harvesting and processing of the food based ingredients no synthetic, man-made chemicals, pesticides, preservatives, hormones, or oil/petroleum based products were used. If a product does not bear the seal, it may not be made from at least 95% organic ingredients.

2. It means that the product is made from food based ingredients, so pure you can eat them!

3. It means that the growing and harvesting techniques are sustainable and do not strip the topsoil of its nutrients.

We believe this is important because we want only the very finest, safest and purist ingredients in our products.
